Foreword
Tom Dooley was an ordinary man—an ordinary citizen, an ordinary doctor, and an ordinary believer. The one unusual thing about Tom was that he was a doer. He acted out his manhood, his responsibilities as a citizen, his Hippocratic oath as a doctor, and his faith in God. This great nation of America was created by such ordinary men doing extraordinary things. In these days of fear, unrest and violence in a world where men yearn more for mere survival than for freedom, Tom Dooley left a legacy of hope and example to people in America and throughout the world.
The Thomas A. Dooley Foundation was created four years ago to continue to act out that legacy as a group of ordinary Americans, confident in themselves, proud of their country, and determined to take an active part in the world. They are a group not just concerned with their own security and comfort, but wanting to give of themselves and their skills so that other peoples ia the world, responding to their new-found freedom, might come to know a better life. Their goal is a world of friendship and understanding, not one of war and hate. As Dr. Tom Dooley believed, the tools for achieving this goal are education and medicine.
Those people of The Thomas A. Dooley Foundation now working in the villages of Asia, those working in chapters and youth leagues across the U.S. are—like Tom Dooley—ordinary people. They are doers and—also like Tom—they are splendid Americans. God bless them.
