Introduction
For 50 years now (1958-2008), the National Museum of Vietnamese History, Hanoi has recorded much success in its activities for research, collection, conservation, exhibition and publication. Especially, the Museum has published over 20 books to present its collections of artifacts, mainly from the Vietnam's prehistory and history. Due to the remarkably historical and cultural values of the presented artifacts, these books have been much appreciated by a wide range of readers, both foreign and Vietnamese.
In addition to the Vietnamese collections, a number of Chinese collections are also presen'ed at the Museum. Not yet exhibited, they also need to be made public somehow.
hi 2004, the first book The Ming Dynasty's Ceramics (1368-1644) was published. Now, the book The Qing Dynasty's Ceramics is introduced. Both of them belong to the book series planed by the Museum.
The collection of Qing ceramics at the National Museum of Vietnamese History is relatively diversified. It was initiated by French scholars in the early 20th centwy together with the idea of founding a Museum under the auspices of the Ecole Française d'Extreme-Orient, Hanoi (later as the Musée Louis Finot).
In 1958, not long after the independence of Vietnam had been restored, the National Museum of Vietnamese History was founded. Since then, like other collections of the Museum, the collection of Qing ceramic has been continuously added. Today it consists of both objects confiscated by the Vietnamese State from illegal commerce and those raised from the shipwrecks off the Viet Nam coast. Wherever are these artifacts come from, all of them reveal much historical, cultural and artistic values and so are quite attractive.
The authors of this book. Dr. Pham Quoc Quan, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Chien and MA. Le Thi Thanh Ha, have made much efforts to complete it in time. They have also received from their colleagues much encouragement and help. Nevertheless, errors and shortcomings in the book are unavoidable. The Museum is thus looking forwards all commends and suggestions from readers to better its publications in the years to come.
