Betrayal by Judas / Cathedral of ToledoGOYApRANCISCO GOYA y Lucientes was born on March 3ist, 1746, at Fuendetodos, near Saragossa. His father, according to somé, was a gilder, according to others, a poor peasant. Of Francisco's childhood little is known; legend has it that his education was rudimentary but that he showed a precocious talent and was encouraged to paint by Don Félix Sal-zedo, Prior of the Carthusian Monastery of Aula Dei near his native village. In 1760 Francisco attended school in Saragossa and alsó studied painting under Don Jósé Lujan y Martinez, an indifferent artist but an excellent teacher with an Italian training. The boy lived in Saragossa until 1763 when[5l
