Preface
Today we are on the threshold of a new Europe - a Europe without frontiers. When the Single European Market is complete in 1993, we will be a good step closer to the European ideal as it was formulated after 1945 by Jean Monnet and Robert Schuman. This also means that a knowledge of foreign languages will become even more important. And not just for the holidaymaker and private traveller, but also for people active in such areas as business, technology, politics, sport and the arts.
The characteristic, and most important, feature of the Euro-dictionary is its particular lexical range. When selecting words and phrases which go beyond a broad, general vocabulary, the editors have focused their attention on the fields of business, trade and travel, and of course given due consideration to politics, technology and cultural affairs. The following examples will also make clear the specific aim of this new series of dictionaries: asylum seeker, backpacker, consumer protection, data protection, double taxation, emission-free, employment agency, environment-conscious, hole in the ozone layer, phonecard, technology transfer, wheel clamp. It is, then, the aim of the Eurodictionaries to give practical and useful help to as many people as possible when they communicate with each other in today's new Europe.
