mType of BuildingHanokA hanokls a traditional Korean house. It is generally a single-story building that uses a traditional heating system known as ondol which heats the floor from underneath. Here, a room is heated by sending warm smoke or, more commonly today, warm water under the floor. Hanok go by different names according to the roof materials used. A thatched-roof house is called a chogajib, a tiled roof house is a giwajib and a wooden roof house is a neowajib. Most guesthouse facilities are tiled roof houses (giwajib). Although it would be natural to assume that a hanok guesthouse would also have a traditional-style interior, many have made rénovations in order to make staying at a hanok more pleasant. Likewise, there are also modem-style houses that have been remodeled with traditional interiors to recreate the hanok experience.Detached House / Single-family House (Western-style House) In général, these houses are one to three stories high and are often referred to as yangok, or Western-style houses. Single homes usually have a large yard, and are separated from other houses. Although in most cases, the entire building serves as a guesthouse; in some cases part of the building is used for other purposes or is resided in by the owner.Apartment / Multi-family House (Villa/Apartment) These are modem residential buildings with multi-unit dwellings. When apartments or villas are used as guesthouses, only part of the building is used. Typically a few floors of an apartment, a few houses of a villa complex, or a few rooms are open to guests.
