ABOUT GYÖRGY CHESSLAY'S WORKS Many types of impulses combine in György Chesslay's work. He does not accept an individual, exclusive method, nor an individual, established road, nor a ready-made style. He attempts everything newly and everything according to his own conception or rather his autocracy, his will or desire, he alters or locates in a new light and this is how he interprets. One who steps into Chesslay's world must participate in a restless and tense expectation in every sacrificing constant new commencement and in bold adventures which do not pertain to goals and which do not endure limitations. And, just as well, this is the most important value in the art of the eighties, as wasintheearlieravant-gardeepoch. As can be recognised at a distance, Chesslay works with individual signs and even still he has avoided an accurate identification with a personal routine of formation. His use of colour, since the beginning, has been originál and individual, because the intensity of the painted surfaces are part of the sculpture, they can be sculpturesquely interpreted (that is they are suggestive of space and the body), they are unique. The sensitivity of the elements is particular, it is the concentrated plasticity that flows from all of Chesslay's forms. And the comprehension of the relationship between the space and the body is placed in the space is individual. That is Chesslay always creates such a relationship between space and the body extended into space, that the body mirrors its surrounding space, while it builds in the space re-interpreted via it. He reaches this, on one part, by actually building in banal, everyday objects and on the other hand, by emphasizing the "artificial" nature of his objects, that is his created works are reminiscent of familiar objects. We meet with surprising ideas in his works: anything can become sculpture. Often he uses the method of handling small individual details. That is he calls a surface of the three dimensional sculptural form a "picture" and here on the culpturesque and interpretable surface, he builds up on autonomous pictorial world. The small picture-like details "teli" about personal stories or they can be seen as personal, isolated events. Something happens there which is part of the greater relationship, although it can be followed within itself, it conveys comprehensible contents. It would be too soon to classify Chesslay's work ultimately. He may proceed in any direction, infact, this constant simultaneous investigation in various directions will probably be characteristic of his further works, as well. Chesslay's works cannot be unambiguously placed in the sphere of "New Expressionism". His "heftig" mode of representation is almost of experimentál character: the consciously "foreign" elements, the roughly handled forms, painted with incandescent colours are placed beside each other experimentally. At the same time Chesslay was the only Hungárián sculptor whose created "wild sculptures" rank with the radical passionate paintings of the "Heftige Maierei". The painted sculpture's aggressive expression catalysed the work of the youngest sculptor generation - and this is undoubtedly due to Chesslay's merít. However, he, like the other talented members of his generation, is not a 'tendency artist', but an individual searching for his identity before everything else, for whom taboos and limitations do not exist. His art is free and unrestrained, fresh and provocative - he reacts to the world, passionately, impartially and always creditably. LORÁND HEGYI
