Foreword This dictionary aims to give concise and accurate definitions of 24,000 of the most important words in use in the English and German languages today. A pronunciation system based on the International Phonetic Alphabet is used (see Key to symbols used in pronunciation). Pronunciation is given for all headwords in both sections of the dictionary, and also for selected subentries in the German-English section. Modern technical, commercial, and informal usage is given particular attention, in preference to outmoded terms or other expressions not in common contemporary use. Definitions are numbered in order to distinguish senses, and abbreviations are used to indicate use in specific technical, scientific, or commercial fields (see Abbreviations used in the Dictionary). An additional feature is the inclusion of idiomatic expressions and phrases, so necessary for the understanding and use of the foreign language. This dictionary, with its emphasis on modernity, together with its compact form and clear typeface, should prove indispensable in the home, at school, in the office, and abroad.
