Hampton Court encompasses nearly five hundred years of English history. Begun in the sixteenth century by Cardinal Wolsey, Henry VIIFs chief minister, the Palace has been extended, altered,\ repaired and renovated over the centuries by Henry himselfand successive kings and queens. Many great events and dramas in royal history have taken place here. Vtewed from the West Gate, Hampton Court today is still the red brick palace of Henry VIII; to the east it presents the stately Baroque fagadé designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the seventeenth century.
