Preface The practice of gastroenterology has evolved dramatically over the past two decades as the science of the alimentary canal has advanced rapidly and new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities have been added to our clinical armamentarium on an almost daily basis. In recognition of the need to advance current teaching materials on the subject of gastroenterology with the aim of incorporating this new knowledge, we undertook the editing of Handbook of Gastroenterology. The success of the first and second editions of Textbook of Gastroenterology attests to the demand for information on the practice of gastroenterology in the modern era. Recognizing the encyclopedic nature of the Textbook and the increasing demand for new knowledge in gastroenterology among trainees and medical students at the earliest level, we developed this handbook. Our aim was to present the quality and depth of the Textbook in a more concise and portable form. The Handbook focuses on the practical clinical aspects of the Textbook, making it particularly useful to the medical student, house officer, and advanced trainee. Of course, we hope that its clarity and completeness will alsó make it a usefixl resource for all physicians who treat patients with gastrointestinal disorders. The associate editors and I are gready indebted to William Hasler, William Tierney, and Peter Traber, who served as the special editors of the handbook. Their careful editing and attention to detail, as weil as their obvious mastery of the practice of gastroenterology, have made the Handbook the useful guide to the discipline that we hope it will be to our readers.
