Series Introduction The current volume, Handbook ofSupportive Care in Cancer, is the seventh in the Basic and Clinical Oncology series. Many of the advances in oncology have resulted from close interaction among various disciplines within the field of medicine and related specialties. This volume follows and expands on this concept to illustrate the success of this relationship as demonstrated by new developments in the supportive care of the cancer patient. These advances have led to both improvements in outcome and a reduction in toxicity from our therapies, in part related to the appropriate use of hematopoietic growth factors and antibiotic support. There has alsó been a recognition of the importance of areas such as pain control, psychosocial oncology, and quality of life. As editor of the series, my goal is to recruit volume editors who have not only established reputations based on their outstanding contributions to oncology, but alsó an appreciation for the dynamic interface between the laboratory and the clinic. To date, the series has consisted of monographs on topics that are of a high level of current interest; Handbook ofSupportive Care in Cancer certainly fits into that category as a most important addition to the series. Volumes in progress focus on the use of purine analogs in cancer therapy, the role of paclitaxel, and controversies in breast cancer. I anticipate that these volumes will provide a valuable contribution to the oncology literature. Bruce D. Cheson ffS iii
