WHY THE LITTLE DOG WAS SADOnce there was a little dog that lived in a kennel in the back garden. He was very young and very inquisitive. When he had got to know the tabby cat, the hens and the cockerel, the ducks and the rabbits and the trees and flowers that lived in the garden he would stand by the garden fence, gazing over it. Several times he tried to jump the fence to explore the fields and forest beyond. But each time he tried, his mother would appear and, gripping his furry coat with her teeth, pull him back firmly into the yard.
