About This Dictionary This entirely new dictionary lists the words most commonly used in English, giving definitions and in many cases examples of use. Grammar notes are given in many entries - irregular plurals for nouns, comparatives and superlatives for adjectives, past forms for verbs. Where a word is commonly used with a preposition, that preposition is given in bold letters. Where there are several pronunciations which are current only the most common are indicated. -r is never pronounced at the end of words, but when a word ending in -r is followed by a vowel the -r can be pronounced. Words are alsó marked with a sign (') to show where the strong beat should be placed, but this is only a guide; the pronunciation of a word can change depending on the position of the word in a sentence.
