This Fourth International Heat Transfer Conference has the following predecessors:

The name "International Heat Transfer Conference" was first used in 1961 and the numeration was Introduced with the Third Conference (Chicago 1966). On that Third Conference, a tendency could be observed towards afour years' sequence and an improvement of " internationality". It also seemed appropri-ate to have a permanent international organization which would recognize the trends in the field of Heat Transfer and also, if necessary, promote them.
Thua in Chicago the "Assembly for International Heat Transfer Conferences" was founded with the main object to secure the continuity of the Conferences. The selection of Paris as the meeting place for the Fourth Conference should add to an "internationalisation".The preparations were conveyed upon French -German committees.
The "Assembly" provided a world-wide organization for the distribution of the Call for Papers and Conference-Announcements,for the screening of the contributions and their selection. The national representatives of the Assembly, were able to accomplish these tasks with tolerable expence.
The efficiency of this system was startling for all those concerned: within a few months, more than 700 manuscripts from all over the world were offered for this Fourth Conference. It was certainly not an easy decision for the Assembly to admit only about half of these papers. On the one hand, 350 potential authers had to be disappointed, on the other hand, however, the capacity of the audience could not be overcharged. For the technical and scientific "handling" of 350 contributions within five days, the rapporteur system, as successfully used in Chicago, has been chosen.
