THE ISOTHERM MIGRATION METHOD FOR TRANSIENT HEAT CONDUCTION ANALYSIS Roll in C. Dix and John Cizek A new iterative computational technique for solution of the transient, one-dimensional heat conduction equation, termed the isotherm migration method, is described. The method is shown t,o have important advantages in problems with temperature dependent properties, phase change, or substantial change in size of the thermally affected region. The principal equation of the method is derived by replacement of the usual dependent variable,T(x,*), with the isotherm position, x(T,TO , in an energy balance expression. Techniques for starting the method, the treatment of various boundary conditions, stability, truncation error and relative efficiency are discussed. "THE ISOTHERM METHOD" PCUR L'ANALYSE DU REGIME TRANSITOIRE DE LA CONDUCTION DE CHALEUR Une technique de calcul, nouvelle et itérative, est décrite pour obtenir la solution en régime transitoire de l'équation de conduction de la chaleur â une dimension, sous le nom "Isotherm Migration Method. Cette methode se montre tres avantageuse pour des problemes avec des propriétés dépendantes de la temperature, des changements de phase ou une variation importante en dimension de la region affectée par la chaleur. L'équation principale de la méthode est distenue en remplaçant la variable dépendante habituelle, T(x,'0, par la position de l'isotherme, x(T.'r), dans une expression de l'équilibré de l'energy. Les moyens pour débuter la'méthode, le traitement des diverses conditions aux limites, la stabilité, l'erreur de troncature et l'efficacité relative, sont discutés. "THE ISOTHERM MIGRATION METHOD" ZUR LOSUNG DER WÄRMELEITUNGSGLEICHUNG Ein neues iteratives Bsrechnungsuerfahren, die sogenannte "Isotherm Migration Method" zur Lösung der eindimensionalen Wärmeieitungs--gleichung ist beschrieben. Dieses Verfahren hat grosse Vorteile in Behandlung von Problemen wo, temperaturafchäwgige Wärmeeigenschaften, Phasenänderungen, oder substantielle Änderung in der Grosse der thermischen beeinflussten Gebiete verhanden sind. Die Ersetzung der abhängigen Variable T(x,*0, durch die-Position eines Isotherms x(T,T), in einem Energiebilanzenausdruck stellt die Hauptgleichung dieser Methode dar. Verfahren zum Starten der Methode, die Behandlungen verschiedener Randbedingungen, Stabilität Auslöschungsfehler und relativer Wirkungsgrad sind diskutiert.
