PREFACE This atlas, by the European Helicobacter pylori Study Group (EHPSG), is intended to provide a comprehensive series of illustrations and photographs that embrace all aspects of Helicobacter pylori. It starts with key events in the story of the organism and ends with what may be its demise as a successful humán pathogen, the development of a vaccine. Each chapter has a short introductory text. The expanded legends along with illustrations allow an easy understanding of the cascade of events that has made the discovery of H. pylori and its role in gastric diseases one of the major medical advances of recent times. The EHPSG was förmed in October 1987 in Copenhagen by a small multidisciplinary group of researchers working in the field. Since then it has grown to include a representative from most European countries and the IXth annual International Workshop returns this year to Copenhagen with an expected audience of 1500-2000 delegates. The prime function of the EHPSG, and the raison d'étre for this atlas, is to disseminate knowledge and be a focus for interest in the organism, as well as fostering research. Since 1994 it has alsó produced The Year in Helicobacter pylori' which reviews the year's publications. The atlas is a typical example of the group's aims and the success of the multi- disciplinary, multinational approach.
