Bővebb ismertető
The aim of The Practical Readers is to teach overseas students some of the simplest trade and technical words in English. Each book of the series is a story, and it is hoped in this way to make the work of learning the new words easy and interesting. Although originally written for technical students, these books may be read with profit and pleasure by others ; for the new words are useful outside the workshop, and are not difficult to learn. In each book of the series, groups of words connected with various trades are taught as new words. A list of these is given at the end of each book. An attempt has been made to grade these technical words so that the easiest are introduced first, and lead gradually on to a more advanced vocabulary. In Helping Hands, the first book of the boys' section, it is assumed that the student knows only about 450 of the commonest English words, as taught and used, for example, in Dr. West's New Method Reader 1. In this explained vocabulary, a story has been written introducing a further 100 technical words, mostly by means of pictures. These are simple words, and they are used in the trades shown in the classified list at the end of the book.
