PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE 38TH ANNUAL MEETING AND EXPOSITION 1996 EDUCATIONAL SESSION BOOKLET The Education Program of the 38th Annual Meeting of The American Society of Hematology covers a broad array of timely subjects. The purpose of the Education Program is to provide attendees with up-to-date, integrated information in critical areas of hematology and hematologic malignancies. In addition, this year there is a special grants workshop and a session entitled "Clinical Networks in the Practice of Hematology/' One of the highlights of this year's meeting will be the Ham-Wasserman Lecture, which will be delivered by Dr. Jack Hirsh of the Hamilton Civic Hospitals Research Centre, Hamilton, Ontario. The title of Dr. Hirsh's lecture is "Anticoagulants: The Old and the New." Another feature, the Meet-the-Professor/Meet-the-Investigator series, has been expanded this year due to its great popularity. For the first time, we have invited non-North American professors and investigators to lead somé of the sessions. This education booklet and the education program itself represent the efforts of many people. The program has been crafted under the thoughtful direction of Dr. Geraldine Schechter, this year's Chair of the Educational Affairs Committee and Chair of the Education Program. In addition, the education booklet would not be possible without the devotion and attention provided by Dr. James McArthur of the University of Washington, who has been responsible for editing the submitted material and for production of the booklet for many years. Dr. McArthur's commitment to this effort has been unstinting. Not only of value to the meeting attendees, the education booklet, which has grown in both size and stature over the years, is now an important adjunct to education efforts in other parts of the world. Last year, the Society provided the education booklet free-of-charge to a number of physicians and trainees in 13 countries around the world. Finally, the 38th Annual Meeting of the Society is accredited by The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. Attendance at both the education and scientific programs provides up to 34 hours of Category 1 credit. John W. Adamson, M.D. President The American Society of Hematology
