c S<\ • 2 V President's Message 40th Annual Meeting and Exposition 1998 Education Program Book I am delighted to welcome you to the 1998 Educational Sessions of the 40th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology. This year we will have the largest number of Educational Sessions in our history-23-representing an extraordinary breadth of hematologic information. Our Educational Sessions are specifically designed to provide clinical hematologists with the most recent basic and clinical data relevant to their practice, and this year's program carries on that important tradition. The highlight of the Educational Sessions each year is the Ham-Wasserman Lecture, named after two of our Society's most distinguished members. The late Dr. T. Hale Ham had the vision of creating an educational program at our annual meeting, and Dr. Louis Wasserman supported and reinforced that vision by providing an endowment for the Educational Sessions. This year I am delighted that the Ham-Wasserman Lecture will be delivered by Prof. Eliane Gluckman of Hőpital Saint-Louis in Paris. The title of Prof. Gluckman's lecture is "Cord Blood Hematopoietic Stem Cells: Biology and Transplantation." Once again, we will have the popular Meet-the-Expert breakfast sessions. This year, more than 40 sessions are scheduled with experts from both North American and nonNorth American countries. The Educational Sessions and this Education Program Book represent the efforts of many people. The Educational Sessions program has been crafted under the superb leadership of Dr. Stanley Schrier, Chair of the Education Program, with the help of the Educational Affairs Committee, chaired by Dr. Orah Platt. This wonderful book, which is nearly twice the size of last year's version, has been fastidiously edited by Dr. Geraldine Schechter, and Dr. James McArthur has once again lovingly overseen its production. Dr. McArthur, who has been responsible for the production of this book since its inception, will be honored this year by the Society for his many years of devoted service to ASH. This year marks a milestone in our Society's educational efforts, since we will be distributing this book to all members of the Society, not just those who attend the meeting. Alsó, as in the recent past, this book will be available to all on the ASH web site (www.hematology.org), allowing hematologists from all over the world to benefit from the expertise of the presenters in the Sessions. For those attending the meeting, a totál of 33.5 Continuing Medical Education credit hours in Category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association are available for attendance at the Educational Sessions and Scientific programs.
