• o •^^Oooc/-'' ® President's Message 46th Annual Meeting and Exposition 2004 Education Program Book Our members teli us that the Education Program is one of the high points of our annual meeting. And the education book, Hematology, has become an integrál part of that program. The book is used as a comprehensive syllabus for didactic teaching sessions in many Hematology fellowship programs. Due to the efforts of past editors the articles in Hematology can now be referenced and are citable through the National Library of Medicine. The contents are alsó now available on our ASH website at www.Hematology.org. The ability to generate this remarkably up-to-date and useful text in the requisite time frame is a triumph of the ability of ASH members and staff to work creatively and under considerable pressure. The process for Hematology 2004 started immediately after our December 2003 meeting, when the 2004 Education Program cochairs, Richárd Larson and Lawrence Leung, along with ASH staff reviewed the 2003 Education program and Hematology 2003, as weil as the three prior editions of Hematology. The editors identified current cutting-edge subjects but alsó looked for areas that had not had the benefit of recent updating. They then decided on an outline for the 2004 Education Program, which they presented to the Executive Committee and Program Committee in January 2004. Considerable discussion and revision lead to refinement of the program and identification of the session chairs and participants, who not only must have the requisite clinical knowledge and experience but who, in addition, have to be able to speak and write articulately. An important aim is to bring in new, young ASH members as participants. The co-chairs had the additional aim of making Hematology 2004 somewhat shorter and more concise than prior editions, with a special focus on new developments. Manuscripts with relevant graphics were then assigned and began arriving during the early summer. They were initially reviewed by our Executive Editor, Virginia Broudy, Associate Editor Nancy Berliner, and Coeditors Richárd Larson and Lawrence Leung. Each manuscript was alsó sent out for external review, because Hematology is a peer-reviewed journal. Corrections were made and approved. The manuscripts were then laid out in the formát you see before you and sent to the printer-this enormous mass of material is somehow handled expeditiously by our Assistant Editor, Janine Bajus-and Hematology 2004 is somehow ready for the December meeting. I've had the opportunity of reviewing several of the articles and Fm immensely impressed with Hematology 2004. Keeping with ASH's traditions, the clinical material presented is of the highest quality available, and the background basic science and relevant pathophysiology is presented in crisp and lucid fashion. The scope of the coverage is remarkable. I would like to express my gratitude and that of the ASH officers to all of the editors, participants, session chairs, and reviewers who worked under very tight deadlines to produce Hematology 2004. In particular, I want to personally thank ASH staff for working to make this volume as good as it is.
