Editors' I5ÖI Conquering Blood Diseases - From Research to Patient Care Fifty years young, ASH is celebrating a birthday this year! In honor of this truly noteworthy anniversary, my fellow Editors and I have prepared what we hope will be a fitting tribute to ASH and its members on this most auspicious occasion. In addition to the very timely and scholarly reviews of the major subject areas that our readers have come to expect, we are alsó including brief overviews to put these state-of-the-art articles into historical perspective. Hematology as a scientific and medical discipline has indeed come a very long way during the past 50 years. For those of you who have been around for a while, we hope these historical summaries serve as pleasant reminders of people and events. For the younger crowd, who might be unaware of the richness of this Society's achievements, these vignettes should prove highly educational. Finally, for those who wish even more detail, the state-of-the-art perspectives that have appeared in Blood throughout the year have been compiled in one convenient volume-ASH 50th Anniversary Reviews: A Salute to the American Society of Hematology-by Blood's Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Cynthia E. Dunbar. Drs. Burns, Dunbar, Muchmore and I hope that you will enjoy these volumes and put them to good use during your busy days as teachers, practitioners, and research scientists. Please remember that all the contents of Hematology 2008 are available online at http:// asheducationbook.hematologylibrary.org/ and know as well that each contribution is peer reviewed and cited in PubMed.
