MbagwuLadies and Gentlemen,It is my privilege to welcome you all on behalf of AB Astra of Sweden to this symposium.I venture to suggest that all of you distinguished people who are active in different fields of medicine have come across the name ASTRA now and again in your efforts to serve the health of mankind.It was in the early forties that Astra, the biggest of the Scandinavian pharma-ceutical companies made its first major achievement by introductíon of Xylo-caine in anaesthesia. In the early sixties this was followed by the introductíon of a low molecular weight iron complex for intramuscular use Jectofer. In between, there have been several minor achievements. Fairly frequently sympo-siums, or symposia if you prefer the latin version have been held in different important cities of the world.The last big Astra symposium was the one held last year in Elsinore, the Danish town made famous by Shakespeare's tragedy: Prince Hamlet. This symposium was on Cardiac Arrhythmias.In 1961, Astra started to work with Heminevrin for these ten years a lot of mentái effort and money have been spent on this product. Today in this most populous city of West and Central Africa graced by one of the finest teaching hospitals in this part of the world, we gather to listen to and discuss with the experts who have lived and worked with this product in those ten years, both in Europe and here in our native Africa.Our distinguished and special guest of honour is a man known to the majority of you by name and reputation.
