Foreword
The present exhibition of carvings, bronzes and drawings includes by
far the most representative collection of Moore's carvings that has
been assembled anywhere. This has been made possible by the wonder-
fully generous response of collectors and museums to our wish that
the artist's seventieth birthday should be celebrated by an exhibition
altogether worthy of the occasion.
At Henry Moore's request the exhibition has been selected and
catalogued by David Sylvester, as was the Arts Council retrospective
at the Tate Gallery in 1951.
We are extremely grateful to Henry Moore and Irina Moore for
the kindness with which they have met our many demands in the pre-
paration of the exhibition.
Mr Moore's secretary, Mrs Betty Tinsley, has been unfailingly
helpful over all the practical arrangements. We are also most grateful
for their assistance to Frank and John Farnham.
The Director and Trustees of the Tate Gallery have taken the
closest interest in this exhibition and we would like to thank Mr
Norman Reid most warmly for his advice and collaboration.
