FOREWORD
by the Duke of Norfolk KG, GCVO, CB, CBE, MC Earl Marshal of England
You will discover when you read this book that heraldry is a very old subject but, I am delighted to say, evergreen. From the period of the tournaments to the present day it has gradually evolved to fulfil the needs of the changing times, and today it is arguably more popular than ever before. Apart from the national Heraldry Society based in London, there are a number of provincial heraldry societies across Britain which cater for a proper study of the subject.
The two authors, Rouge Croix Pursuivant and Lancaster Herald, are full-time practising heralds at the College of Arms and are well versed in their chosen profession and the intricacies of heraldry. They have, I believe, given a fresh approach to this intriguing and colourful subject, and have taken many illustrations from the official records of the College of Arms which have not hitherto been published.
