FOREWORD
The collection of writings that follows is history. However, it is not history that has been corrected, brought up-to-date or written with the aid of hindsight. It is the on-the-spot assessments, judgments and interpretations of events as they were unfolding. It is not history written by people who were watching the unfolding of events from the sidelines. It is history recorded by people who were themselves makers ofhistory. 11 is history written in the heat of battle. This is not a full history of the Communist Party, USA. The articles are interesting and important flashbacks.
This is history at its very be.st because it is written from an honest partisan viewpoint. It is the working-class partisan viewpoint that gives it an objectivity that is not often found in books or articles on history. Because it is partisan, it comes closest to the truth.
Life is not an abstract balance of good and evil. To have meaning, what is just and what is unjust, what is progressive and what is reactionary, must be judged within the framework of the objective train of history. Because the train of human society has a progressive direction, all forces and events that propel it are just and progressive, and all forces and events that resist and retard its advance are reactionary and unjust.
