PREFACE
The Bolyai János Mathematical Society sponsors in every year one or more international conferences in various fields of mathematics of general interest. The conference on "Linear Spaces and Operators" held in 1964 at Balatonföldvár was a success and this encouraged the Society to organize in 1970 again a conference in the domain of functional analysis, this time at Tihany, another picturesque part of the shore of lake Balaton. The subject now was specified as "Hilbert Space Operators and Operator algebras".
It is perhaps not only a personal preference to say that this is one of the most exciting fields in contemporary mathematics. Beyond its intrinsic interest, it connects areas of research that apparently lie widely apart, as shown by its applications in various parts of pure mathematics, probability theory, mathematical statistics, as well as in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. So it is understandable that the rapid progress of the theory is followed by vivid interest not only of the specialists but of a wide group of nonspecialists also: mathematicians as well as physicists and scientists of various other areas.
The conference was attended by a considerable number of very distinguished scientists from various countries. Many interesting papers were presented and
they were followed by high level and fruitful formal and informal discussions. •
The work of the conference began in the afternoon on September 14 and ended at noon on September 18. The length of the lectures was generally 25 minutes including the time of discussion. Four or five lectures were given in the morning and a similar number in the afternoon session; there were no parallel sections.
The present volume of the proceedings of the conference contains the papers submitted for ptibUcation to the Organizing Committee. Shortened versions of most of these papers were read at the conference by their authors; a few other authors who were not able to attend for various reasons had their papers presented by other participants or by the Organizing Committee. In addition, the full programme of the conference, as well as a list of participants and their mailing addresses are included. This list also contains authors who had submitted papers but did not attend; their names are marked with an asterisk.
May this volume enhance a fruitful and widespread continuation of the work done in the Conference
