List of Plates
Plate 1. Although they have considerable knowledge of green, yellow, red, and blue, people in single, isolated disciplines are unable to manage gray (the "whole") of which they have no knowledge. Management is not even focused on gray, as the arrows indicate. This approach to management was generally recognized as a failure many years ago.
Plate 2. People in a multi-disciplinary team are focusing on gray from their perspective, as arrows indicate, but still with no knowledge of gray. Failures arising from this approach to management were attributed to poor communication owing to the jargon associated with the various disciplines, rather than a lack of knowledge.
Plate 3. To overcome communication problems, people trained in several disciplines form an interdisciplinary team which then focuses its attention on gray, as the arrows indicate. Knowledge of gray is still lacking, however. The failures arising from this approach to management have only recently been acknowledged.
Plate 4. The gray sphere represents the selection of a whole, the determination of the goal, and the application of the hrm model. Holistic management manages gray by looking outwardly from gray's perspectives at all available knowledge, as the arrows indicate. We now have knowledge of gray through selection of a management "whole" and the detailed formulation of a comprehensive goal in three parts combined with the use of a thought model to bring about that goal. Management now utilizes knowledge from all sources and disciplines.
