Introduction:Why We Wrote This BookIn The Way That We DidAs everyone who reads many books may know, the introduction is the place where the author is allowed to dump all of his schmaltzy philosophy on the unsuspecting heads of his readers. It's where writers convince you of how pure their motives are. Usually, the longer the introduction, the purer the motives of the author, or at least that's how it seems. Well, we have some pure motives too. But, like 99 3/4% of everyone who has ever written a book, our prime motivation was income. So, now that you understand that, please allow us to dump all of our schmaltzy philosophy on your somewhat suspecting head, so you know why we wrote this book in the way that we did. Before we go any further, let's can this "we" business. You know that this book is a collaboration of two individuals, but saying "we" all the time is awkward and even a little bit tacky. So from now on, "I" means either one of us or both of us.Now that we've got that straight, let's get on to the philosophy. We I mean, I, wrote this book in the way that I did because I wish there had been something like it when I started down the yellow brick road of the music business. It took me a number of years just to find out that I had no idea how this business really worked. Part of the reason for this was that nobody would tell me how it worked, and part of the reason was that I wouldn't listen to anybody who tried. The biggest reason that nobody would tell me how the music business really worked was that nobody really knew. And nobody wants to admit ignorance in a field in which everyone claims to know it all.
