Preface
The objective of this text is to provide a comprehensive and practical introduction to the human resource function and the human resource processes in and around a business, supporting this through extensive illustrative material and evidence from company practices.
In response to market research and in order to assist continuity and familiarity with the organisation of the text for those recommending it for courses, we have maintained the overall structure of the book with its logical flow in a seven-part structure, with the core of the text covered in the 35 chapters which comprise Parts II-VII. Each of these parts begins with an opening chapter reviewing the strategic aspects of the human resource function that is the subject of that part, thereby reflecting the current interest in strategy and making the necessary link to the concept of HRM, but without becoming involved in its sometimes incoherent lack of agenda. This is followed by several chapters each describing and discussing the core operational aspects. The final chapter in each part addresses the practical Interactive skills required by HR people in relation to the heart of the function.
Our publisher had the text of the 1998 fourth edition extensively reviewed and a synthesis of the reviewers' suggestions has led to the following changes:
¦ Part I (Introduction) reverts to three chapters by the inclusion of a new chapter on contemporary issues in HRM.
¦ Part II (Organisation) has communication and information condensed from two chapters to one and the chairing of meetings has been introduced as the interactive skill feature. The material on presentation has been shortened and moved to Part V.
¦ Part III (Resourcing) has a new chapter on retention.
¦ Part IV (Performance) has a new chapter on leadership and motivation and the management of diversity is expanded to two chapters.
¦ Part VIII (Ethics) in the fourth edition has been dropped.
Parts II to VII maintain the now well-established pattern of:
¦ STRATEGY ¦ OPERATION ¦ INTERACTION
We have comprehensively updated and revised the material to encompass legislative changes, emerging issues of professional and academic debate, findings and commentary from our own recent research into contemporary business practices, and other recent data and survey findings.
There is a range of assessment material and new illustrations, as well as several design features to assist further both full-time and part-time students in using and learning from the text; these include:
¦ Integrated Window on Practice boxes provide a range of illustrative material throughout the text, including examples of real company practice, survey results, anecdotes and quotes, and court cases.
