Preface
Because of the relative lack of demand for Hungarian Studies, doing research and publishing in that field is neither easy, nor a rewarding activity. Nevertheless, we have been engaged in this field for nearly four decades. Since the appearance of a similar volume two decades ago {The Austro-Hungarian Mind, 1989), we have published many scores of similar scholarly articles on various related topics. But these articles, written in two languages (English and Hungarian), are scattered in learned periodicals and scholarly books throughout the world (Europe, North America and South America). Thus, they are difficult to come by. It is for this reason that we have decided to put out another similar volume, containing a sampling of our publications on a specifically circumscribed topic: the history of Hungarian-Americans.
On this occasion we have selected twelve such articles on Hungarian American history. They include four articles on Louis Kossuth's tumultuous mid-19th-century visit to the United States following the defeat of the Revolution of 1848-1849; two articles on the political activities of Hungarian Americans during and immediately after World War II, wherein they tried to explains Hungary's alliance with Nazi Germany; and one article each on such sub-topics as Hungarian American history in general, the relationship of Hungarian Americans to the mother country since the mid-19th century, the changing image and self-image of Hungarian Americans during the same period, the question of dual and multiple identity from the vantage point of Hungarian Americans, the fate of Hungarian victims of the steel mills and coal mines of eariy 20th-century Western Pennsylvania as portrayed in contemporary poetry, and finally the unfortunate relationship between Hungarians and Slovaks in turn-of-the-century America. The souring of this relationship between these two nations - who have coexisted in
