to all oonfevenae partiaipants and to all interested in Hungarian aavtographic aativities PREFACE In 1967 the Cartographic Subcommission of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences entrusted the Editor to orpanize, compile and edit the Hungarian Cartographical Studies - 1989, the sixth volume of this series. An invitational circular was distributed to all Hungarian institutions involved in some way in, cartographic activity for suggestion of topics, A small ad hoc committee of Dr.János Lerner /Department of Cartography, Loránd Eötvös University of Sciences/, Major László Buga /Ágoston Tc3th Cartographic Institute of the Hungarian People's Army/ and the Editor reviewed and voted independently to include, reject or fuse the topics. Upon unanimous voting, invitation letters were sent to future authors in late autumn of 1987. The great majority of the ad hoc committee's suggestions were materialized. Also some basic principles as to invite as many authors as possible ( but for an author with a limitation of furnishing one main article only ), that the studies must be heavily documented with hard facts, that the subjects should be embedded - whenever possible - in a short historical background. Finally, the fresh air of criticism is welcomed. The studies should concentrate on the achievements, therefore, entirely theoretical papers are not to be excluded but should be kept on a minimal level. I am particularly indebted to the fifty-three authors for submitting forty studies, for their understanding and tolerance of the necessary "blue pencil" and for accepting the above described basic principles, which consequently led to re-writing quite a number of original papers. Without severely hurting some of the texts, overlapping could' not be completely eliminated, so, cross-references were included. VJith bold letters I have also tried to enhance the most important parts of the texts, but of course they should not be considered as key-words. Structuring the book with a wide range of subjects like this may at any time be disputed. The volume is built up as follows: - after two introductory papers the Cartographic Enterprise (Cartographia) presents studies on her wide-range activity /page 15 - 86/, - three papers deal with the Army Map Service, th.is is followed by further three papers on remote sensing achievements, - four studies /pages 131-16o/ give results on various aspects of regional planning, two on geological mapping, one nn soil mapping / also GD their GIS/ ; to this activity arc at--tached two papers, dealing vjith GIS problems, .i r ¦ : i' ; II'. mii H'it
