Editorial
After a year's enforced break, I am glad to announce to our readers that publication of the Hungarian Music Quarterly has begun again, or rather is continuing. Financial difficulties prevented the HMQ from appearing in 1991. The discontinuation in 1991 of the subsidy it had been receiving from the Ministry of Culture was the result of the reduction in the Ministry's budget imposed by Parliament; for 1992, however, our magazine can once again rely on support from this source, though the amount will be more modest. Assistance has had to be sought from other sponsors as well (whose names can be found on the title-page), and we are particularly indebted to the Editio Música Budapest publishing house for material and moral support, without which the revival of the magazine would have been impossible. Unfortunately the transition from socialism to capitalism has not been going smoothly in this field either, and we too are experiencing all the rigours of a market economy. Needless to say, production costs and postage have risen as a result of high inflation, so that we would be very glad of more subscribers. The HMQ will continue to fulfil its task and function of making Hungary's musical culture known abroad. It is still the main channel of information about Hungarian musical life; our readers, therefore, have a right to expect detailed reporting based on objective criteria, and to demand articles that are succinct and well-informed. How worthwile our work is, and how far this magazine achieves its aims, we can only judge from the personal reactions of individuals. We would greatly appreciate more letters from readers, which we could publish. We would like to form as close a relationship with our readers as possible, and to receive your comments, criticism and advice so as to improve the standard of the service we offer.
