COMPOSITION
Acetyldigitoxin, crystalline
0.2 mg. in tablets
0.2 mg. in ampoules (2 ml.)
ACTION
ACEDOXIN is a slowly acting cardiac glycoside with protracted effect. Regarding the onset of action it lies between lanatoside C and digitoxin while the duration of action is somewhat shorter than that of digitoxin. Noticeable effect may be observed two to four hours after oral intake while the development of the full effect takes about eight hours. Absorption from the gastrointestinal tract and tolerance are excellent.
Congestive heart failure due to valvular disease or myocardial degeneration. Decompensated cor pulmonale. Heart failure due to myocarditis or thyreotoxicosis. Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia or atrial fibrillation with tachycardia.
In general 0.4 to 0.8 mg. (2 to A tablets or 1 to 2 ampoules) are given in the first few days of treatment until digitalization is attained. Dosage is then reduced to the maintenance level, exhibiting a rather wide individual variation, lying, however, generally between 0.1 to 0.3 mg. to 1 ^tablets) daily. In severe cases and especially in congestive heart failure in consequence of hyperthyroidism greater maintenance doses may be required. In paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia 1 to 2 ampoules are given by slow intravenous injection. This dose may be repeated once or twice at two hours intervals if needed.
