z This and the following chapter are intended to make you
mg familiar with the phonetic transcription we devised and to
1 help you get used to the sounds of Hungarian.
I As a minimum vocabulary for your trip, we've selected a
1 number of basic words and phrases under the title "Some
I Basic Expressions" (pages 10-15).
An outline of the spelling and sounds of Hungarian
I You'11 find the pronunciation of the Hungarian letters and
I sounds explained below, as well as the symbols we use for
| them in the transcription. Note that Hungarian has some
I diacritical signs—special markings over certain letters—
§ which we don't use in English.
| The imitated pronunciation should be read as if it were
I English except for any special rules set out below. It is based
I on Standard British pronunciation, though we have tried to
l take into account General American pronunciation as well.
I Of course, the sounds of any two languages are never exactly
I the same; but if you follow carefully the indications supplied
| here, you'11 have no difficulty in reading our transcription in
I such a way as to make yourself understood.
I Letters written in bold type should be stressed (pronounced
!Mg louder).
