INTRODUCTION
This bibliographical list was compiled by Elemer Bake, Finno-Ugrian Area Librarian in the Slavic and Central European Division, Reference Department, and William Solyom-Fekete, Legal Specialist in the European Law Division, Law Library, pursuant to the instructions of Representative Edward J. Patten. Representative Patten requested the Library to Identify "books, periodicals and documents published by Hungarian and Western authors on the Hungarian population of Rumania, mostly in Transylvania." As a consequence, works published by Rumanian authors in or outside Rumania were omitted.
This compilation is based exclusively upon the holdings of the Library of Congress. The size of the Library's collections, which reflects the presence of the Hungarians in Transylvania for over one thousand years, made it impossible to list all available materials.
The compilers divided their material into thirteen chapters according to subject fields pertinent to the publications collected. Titles under each subject chapter, with the exception of Chapter I (General Works), are subdivided as follows; (A) Special Reference Works; (B) Periodicals and Serials; (C) Monographs; (D) Minor Publications (not exceeding pages).
Monographic works in Chapter V (Constitution and Law), and Chapter XII (Literature) were further subdivided as subchapters V/C 1: "National Law« and 2: "International Law," and XIl/C 1: "Scholarly Works" and 2: "Fiction, Poetry," respectively.
