András Vigh, 45, model designer, father of a son, and divorced from his wife. Returning from a business trip abroad, he learns that in his absence his latest design was given over to a young colleague for redesigning. Excitedly, he bursts into the manager's room to demand an explanation from the boss, who was one of his class back at the university, where they used to build plans for the future together. Vigh is just in-capableofseeingthereasonsadvanced by his boss,who is pleading realistical considerations, as he has to keep in view the wider interests of his firm, its profitability.
of his self-imposed seclusion and take him with him to Lake Balaton, for a large lakeside party where, he says, András would be able to meet a high executive of the industry. There's no room in Peter's car, and András must not drive as he is under the influence of the drugs he is taking: one of the women in the party, Maya, agrees to drive András's car. Maya also acts as András's guide at the party where he feels ill at ease amid all the flashy elegance. His meeting with the high executive goes badly, too; and soon he is fed up with it all. Maya feels herself bound to drive András home.
András returns to the designing department. In the tense atmosphere, he suddenly blows the top - he overturns his drawing desk, and dashes out of the room.
He looks up an uncle of his former wife, the distinguished professor of medicine, who sends him over to the neurological department. After a short period of treatment, he is released from hospital, but he is still on the sick list. For days on end he never leaves his rooms. One day Péter, a colleague and friend, calls on him — he almost has to use force to drag András out
On the way home they give a lift to a girl who is hitch-hiking her way to Budapest. Maya feels that with Anikó, the vivacious and bright girl, as her rival, she has no chance whatever with András: therefore she leaves the two to themselves. Anikó spends the night in András' flat: she couldn't go home to her place, as her mother is having her "guy" staying at her place. However, she makes it clear that anything beyond friendship is out of the question between them. She attempts to pep him up, to rouse him out of his lethargy, draw him forth out of his shell.
