Bővebb ismertető
This book was written with a twofold purpose. Its main aim is to provide something which has hitherto been lacking with regard to Hungary-a guidebook of a convenient formát which visitors may carry with them, and refer to for many different kinds of information. It alsó has the aim of presenting a picture of Hungary to others, who are planning a journey to this country or want to learn something about Hungary and the Hungarians. It is for such "armchair travellers" especially that so many illustrations have been included. It is true, of course, that neither guidebook descriptions nor illustrations can give an adequate idea of the everyday life, of work and leisure, of what might be called the personality of a country and people, or of the thousand and one homely details which make up the pattern of life. These can only be known at first hand. But if this book makes any readers to whom Hungary has been hitherto an unknown country, feel: here is a land which has much to offer, one worth knowing and making friends with- then its publication will have been justified. A few words here about the plan of the book may help travellers in Hungary to use it to their best advantage. It is divided into geographical regions, each having its own character and type of scenery. The route followed in describing the different towns and villages is the one a traveller would be most >, likely to take, following the main roads and railways. The first chapter is devoted to Budapest, as the obvious starting point for seeing the country. Then comes Transdanubia, the area which lies between the Danube and the Austrian bordér, and includes Lake Balaton, which no visitor should miss seeing. The next chapter deals with northern Hungary, and describes the long chain of hills which stretches from a point just north of Budapest up to the Czechoslovak bordér, and eastwards to the bordér of the Soviet Union. The following chapter covers the whole area east of the Danube, known as the Great Plain, an unbroken stretch of level country reaching to the Rumanian and Yugoslav borders, and crossed by the great river Tisza. The last chapter is a sort of Traveller's Book
