PREFACE TO THE ENGLISH EDinON
Since its establishment, a number of water management projects and hydrotechnical measures have been dimensioned, or checked hydraulically at the Research Instimte for Water Resources Development, with the help of diverse hydromechanical models. In these tests the existing theories of different model types have been applied, but the conventional model theories proved often unsatisfactory for solving particular problems. This has prompted the development of the theory and the solution of specific theoretical problems.
In the present volume a review is presented on the one hand of the orthodox theory of hydrotechnical modelling, on the other of the efforts aimed at the improvement thereof The orthodox theory is not only presented in systematical order, but its potential applications are also indicated, together with its limitations, inconsistencies and difficulties in application. At the same time approaches are outlined for the solution of problems which do not yield to the orthodox methods.
The economic advantages accruing from the application of hydromechanical modelling methods have already been established beyond doubt. Nevertheless, it is deemed desirable to summarize the principles and methods suited for quantifying the economic efficiency of application, since decisions are, in general, made easier on the basis of tangible economic consequences, than on that of qualitative considerations. This is the reason why methods are presented in this volume for the economic evaluation of the benefits accruing from the use of hydromechanical model studies.
' The chapter on the processing and evaluation of measurement results should be of interest to those engaged in model testing, but the methods are applicable in several other domains of hydromechanics, hydrology and physics as well
The English version is expected to be of interest also to those, who owing to unfamiliarity with the language, could not use the earlier, Hungarian version in their work. "
