IntroductionThis boolí stems from the Second International Symposium on Hypertension in the Community, which toolc place in Jerusalem in December, 1985. Sixteen countries from five continents participated in the convention. This broad representation afforded an excellent opportunity for sharing experiences and exchanging information.This publication is devoted to the control of hypertension throughout the world. It includes descriptions of local and national hypertension control programs in developing countries, in countries with shifting populations and increasing urbanization, as well as in Western countries. It also looks at the relevance to blood pressure of such factors as stress, eating habits and exercise, as well as the influence of cultural, racial and ethnic factors on development of hypertension. Part of the material includes information which is not generally available in the usual international meetings and journals but is vital for the further understanding and expansion of our knowledge of hypertension. The book also reports on new approaches to the prevention, detection, treatment and monitoring of hypertension in the community in various ethnic groups. Furthermore, it includes an update on hypertension trials with new nonpharmacological and pharmacological treatments, and on improved methods of compliance. New approaches to the prevention of hypertension are described, including the doctor-nurse teamwork approach and modern methods of health education.
