Now I know that the man who leaves this earth will be prey to a similar malady, but I do not know how to name this affliction.German TitovAt the time when Jacques Bergier and I published the book The Morning of the Magicians we did not expect the work to find such a large public. The impact of the book, we thought, would be more one of depth than one of numbershopefully shaking its readers to the very core. We simply could not imagine that it would attract the general public.The publication of the book was preceded by many years of careful research over a broad spectrum of knowledge: physics, biology, history, mysticism, literature, and more. Our aim was to reconcile to a certain extent ancient thinking based on the occult and on magic with the thought of our own time. The past and the future were viewed from the perspective of a method we called in that book "the fantastic;" the book ended with a prognosis for the future of mankind.I have never stopped asking myself the three questions that have always moved the mind of man: Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going? In The Morning of the Magicians we raised these questions once again, but this time with a contemporary slant, in an almost barbaric fashion, in the manner of hard-pressed men defending themselves with every weapon available to them, from the spear to the rocket, from the magical incantation to the mathematical equation.We are living in a time when the question marks have grown to such gigantic proportions that they stretch way beyond our planet.
