Introduction "Though the mills of God grind slowly, yet they grind exceeding small!" —Friedrich von Logau History has a way of correcting itself. Sometimes it requires a few weeks; at other times it requires years— even centuries. History is not created by historians, or even newspaper reporters. It consists of events and facts, and sooner or later the truth emerges. As a reporter and writer I have covered a number of cases where an error, misjudgment, or sometimes deliberate falsification has been rectified by a later disclosure of facts. Some of these facts were not known at the time of the event, or perhaps ignored for one reason or another. Two instances of this sort come to mind. In one, the Massie case in Hawaii, I covered the trial of four people accused of shooting to death one of five beach boys who had supposedly raped the wife of a Navy officer. Thirty-five years later I wrote Rape in Paradise which exonerated the beach boys and disclosed a monumental miscarriáge of justice. In another book, The Big Nail, written some sixty years after the supposed discovery of the North Pole by Robert Peary in 1907, another miscarriage of justice was revealed. By no stretch of the imagination could Admiral Peary have reached the Pole. Dr. Frederick Cook, who said he reached the Pole a year before Peary, died a disullusioned and heart-broken old man, the whole world believing he was a cheat and fraud. Peary died a nation's hero. I mention these personal references because in the present book I hope to rectify, to whatever extent is now 5
