INTRODUCTIONThis collection of papers arises out of an international seminar organized by the Data for Development Association with the co-sponsorships of Unesco and the Intemational Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). The seminar took place from 17-23 June 1979 in Chamrousse near Grenoble, France. Its aim was to discuss, under the general theme of "information systems in pubhc administration and their role in economic and social development" the organization of information and the management of data resources in govemment, with special attention to the needs of development planning.The seminar sessions were of two sorts: plenary sessions of which papers of a general nature were presented and discussed; and parallel working group sessions. The results of working group discussions were reported back and commented on in plenary session. The working groups were given as themes certain key development issues, either sectoral (indus-^ trial development, traditional sector development ) or technical (bibliographic and documentary services, use of new computer communication technologies).
