Carina first saw the wild boy. She went out to the field near the big trees where the mushrooms grew. It was early in the morning and her red shoes became all wet and dark with the dew on the grass. As she walked round the fence by the trees, she saw three deer in the mushroom field. They looked up with their quick heads and began to leap away towards the Forest. Then Carina saw the wild boy. He was on his hands and feet like the deer, and he looked up as quickly as they had. But he did not leap away at once, so Carina had the time to look at him. His hair was long and brown and it covered his shoulders and his back. His body was something between black and brown, like the skin of a wild animal. He stared at Carina for a long time, but when she moved towards him, he ran away on all fours, leaping like the deer. "Come back," Carina called. "I won't hurt you."
