Preface As Hungary has successfully been transformed into a country with a well functioning markét economy and a stable democratic political system the main economic issues are no longer related to transition but to modernization and to the creation of a sustainable growth path. Does the country have the capacity to follow a path of knowledge based economic development as perhaps the most promising way of modernization? What are the potentials in science and technology, régiónál innovation, entrepreneurship the country can build on in the long run? What should be the role of the small business sector? Couldn't the country learn from certain international experiences to promote further development of its economic-social system? These questions led to the idea of organizing an international workshop at the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Pécs in July 2000 by bringing together international and Hungárián experts in innovation, entrepreneurship and régiónál economics. The workshop was part of a series of events celebrating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Faculty. Earlier versions of most of the papers included in this book were presented at this workshop. We should like to thank Hugh M. Spall for his linguistic editing. We alsó wish to express our gratitude to the University of Pécs and the Faculty of Business and Economics for financial support.
