ABOUT THE BOOK
In this wry, witty and moving narrative, the author is the first of the noted Hollywood Ten to tell the whole, incredible story of the ten screenwriters, producers and directors who went to prison because they refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee; and so paid their debt to society for the crime called contempt of court. The 1947 investigation was internationally publicized, a Hollywood extravaganza, with cheering movie fans, and with newsreel and TV cameras recording the stars who came to bear witness and with antics from the Committee's Chairman, J. Parnell Thomas who was soon to be indicted and jailed for embezzlement . . . But the circus had a tragic ending; for even today, only a few of the Ten - all of them distinguished in their fields - are permitted to work in Hollywood under their own names . . . There's a blacklist. This is the story of hundreds of artists in the entertainment world for whom that blacklist exists now - twenty years after the Hollywood Ten were tried.
