Preface CjooD literature speaks for itself. Because the reader should experience it directly, we have deliberately omitted such materials as introductions, background essays, and study questions. At the end of each volume in Insight: American Literature, however, there are brief statements about each of the writers represented in that volume. The reader will alsó notice that virtually all of the works are reproduced without sxpurgation, abridgment, or condensation. We feel strongly that, except in unusual instances, works of literature should be read as intended by the writer. This series is an outgrowth of the work done in the Curriculum Study Center in English at Carnegie-Mellon University, a cooperative venture between Carnegie and seven school systems in and around Pittsburgh. We are indebted to the students, instructors, and administrators who experimented with us in demonstrating the validity of the basic concepts of a new program in literature. After careful evaluation of the program, many of the specific works of literature have been changed and the instructor's manual rewritten. We are especially indebted to Mildred B. Wolfe, now on the Carnegie faculty, who served as administrative assistant not only in the Center but alsó in the publishing project. b. w. c. La Se J R. C. S. E. Re S.
