Introduction
Anna Wessely
Collegium Budapest organised six workshop conferences on the history and present state of the humanities in the course of the academic year 1999-2000. They were all closely linked to the focus group on "The Humanities in Historical and Comparative Perspective", convened by Sally Humphreys and Cábor Klaniczay. The present volume of the Workshop Series offers a selection of the papers prepared for the conferences "The Humanities in Europe in the 18th-20th Centuries" (December 1999) and "The Humanities and the Social Role of the Intellectual" (February 2000) at Collegium Budapest.
Since plans to participate in an international research project on the political history of the humanities were also discussed at the December 1999 workshop, the present volume includes the first draft proposal for that project by A. Wessely. Cenerous support by the Volkswagen-Stiftung made it possible to invite several young scholars from East and East Central Europe to join the discussions of that workshop on the state and prospects of the humanities in this region following the political changes of 1989-1990.
