AO I Tokyo Shibaura Electric Co., Ltd, (Japan) SUMMARY Recently, there is a problem of the transient stability of long-distance, large-capacity transmission lines in Japan There are some methods for settling them ; for example, dynamic breaking of generator, high response and high gain excitation for generator, and compensation of line reactance with series capacitor, etc. . . The Chubu Electric Power Company and the Tokyo Shibaura Electric Company could have developed a practical model of dynamic breaking resistor among them, so-called the System Damping Resistor (SDR), which has been adopted in the 275 kV power system of the Chubu Electric Power Co. It was a more effective and economical method for improving the transient stability than other methods. The details on development of SDR and the field test results for SDR are described in this paper. Japan, Power system, Resistor, Test result. Transient stability. Transmission capacity of a line is determined by its allowable current, voltage drop or stability etc. It is often determined only by transient stability of the line, especially in case of long-distance, large-capacity transmission lines. In order to meet ever-increasing power demands, it is necessary to develop the large-scale power stations in the recent power systems, while the generating sites are becoming a long way off from demand centers due to the difficulties of land acquisition and the pollution problems. And also a number of large-capacity power plants have been developed collectively and their power is very often carried through the long-distance, large-capacity transmission lines. Consequently, it has become more necessary to improve transient stability power limit of these transmission lines. The Chubu Electric Power Co. which has been examining many kinds of counter-measures for the improvement of reliability in the electricity supply, developed the System Damping Resistor (SDR) applied to Owase Trunk Line (275 kV, 141 km, 2 cct).
