INTRODUCTION In this introduction I want to explain briefly the purpose of International English to those who can already read English. I hope they will then be able to help their friends, relations and children who are just beginning to learn the language. This is the second of five books to help people to read and write English from the beginning. It is suitable for both adults and children. No previous knowledge of English is required. The book is written in a way to enable the beginner to help himself to learn the language without a teacher ; but if he has a teacher he will of course learn even better. He will be able to read the sentences with the help of the pictures, and he will be able to do the writing on the right-hand pages because it uses the same kinds of sentences as those he has already learnt to read on the left-hand pages. Moreover, he will be able to write the sentences correctly because he is supplied with all the material to do so. This is very important, because we do not really learn by doing an exercise unless we do it correctly. Many people will use this book on their own. I have therefore made it as simple as possible and as gradual as possible. Each small step is practised again and again before the reader goes on to the next one. In this way he will learn a little English very thoroughly. He will then be ready to go on to the next stage with complete confidence, and then on to the next, and so on, till at last he can read and write English fluently. RONALD RIDOUT
