INTRODUCTION
The first two books of International English contained no written instructions at all, since they would not have been understood by the complete beginner. Both the reading matter and the exercises explained themselves with the aid of illustrations, arrows and specimen answers. This third book is arranged in much the same way as the first two. The only difference is that I have introduced a few simple instructions towards the end. They are written in the very simple English with which the student is already familiar, and will prepare the way for fuller instructions in the later books.
Like the earlier books, Book 3 of International English is suitable for both adults and children. Only one assumption is made: unless the student has had experience of the language elsewhere, he must have worked through Books I and 2 before starting the present book.
For the benefit of educationists I should like briefly to explain the purpose of International English. It has been written to enable the beginner to help himself to read and write the language without a teacher. (If a teacher is available, progress will of course be still more rapid.) It is based on the self-help method. The student helps himself to read the sentences with the aid of the pictures. Then he helps himself to do the writing on the right-hand page. And he writes his sentences correctly because he is supplied with and already understands all the material needed for them. He learns quickly, because he makes almost no mistakes at all.
I have made the book as simple and gradual as possible. Each new element of language is practised many times before the next one is introduced. In this way the student will learn a little English very thoroughly. He will then be able to go on to the next book with complete confidence.
