INTRODUCTIONLike the first four books of International English, this fifth book is planned so that it can be easily handled by beginners. Since students who are beginners cannot understand complicated explanations in English, everything has been made as self-explanatory as possible. Provided the student has worked through the other four books, with the help of the pictures and the context he should be able to understand all that he reads in this book. In other words, he will be able to help himself to read correctly. This is the self-help method. When he writes the exercises on the right-hand pages, he will be able to help himself in much the same way. The simple instructions are written in the words and structures that he has already learnt. The sentences that he is asked to write have just been practised on the reading page. He is provided with all the material he needs to arrive at the right answers. By this self-help method he is largely prevented from making mistakes. By writing correct sentences, he is helped to learn correct English. We learn by doing; but we learn far better by doing correctly.I have made the book very simple, gradual and repetitive, so that as far as possible the student can use it on his own and teach himself. But, naturally, progress will be still more rapid with the extra help of a teacher. The book is suitable for adults and children alike.RONALD RIDOUT
